Paintings of Skulls by Paul Woods

New Skull painting March 2016 I have updated some of these paintings - after months 2 or so of looking at these and while starting another slightly larger one 10x12 in . I have added a few more glazes to the older paintings. Oh since taking these photos I have put a matte glaze to reduce glare, last thing is to frame these . 10x8in 10x8in 12x10 in 10x8 in

Experimental black and white postprocessing

I shoot 35mm c41 kodak (RIP) and some fuji 400cn neopan and also digital both 1d classic and 1ds mkii.   Some scans were of a very low resolution before I started others I just added some noise grain and lots of contrast. The Kodak 400 was passed its sell by date and returned with such a distinct grain  - I will scan again at home myself but for now here is a semi coherent  collection of 3 different formats with almost similar post processing  - the only differences being the initial resolution of the scans and digital shots altering the grain or noise size . Looking forward to seeing results from the Lab ! All image copywrite Paul Woods . Along came a spider

Along came a spider By Paul Woods This image is a photo stack of 12 images shot with an external speedlite with a plastic bag and elastic band as a diffuser .   Triggered of camera by radio trigger.  I  shot 12 images before the spider moved (it was slightly chilled in the refrigerator in a film canister before hand) the recycling time of the speedlite meaning I had a few seconds between each shot . As anyone knows macro at such a magnification can have DOF issues . I have used a reverse ring and an old kit lens from a 35mm film camera 35-80mm from a 50eos . One has to pick an aperture and pressing the dof preview button dismount the lens to keep the aperture set. This in turn means a darker viewfinder if one picks a large fstop as needed for macro to increase area in focus.  I used  photoshop to stack the images - this image still needs more cleaning up before I print (always an ongoing process). It needed a bit of work too after the stacking as it is a co...

2014 artist statement

Paul Woods comes from a fine art background attending Art college for 2 years before leaving. Having worked as a professional screenprinter among other professions he always seemed to utilise computers to create artworks whether it was graphic design or 3d modeling or digital photography. Later adding multimedia to his skillset he embraced animation and music . Paul has illustrated a spanish poetry book drawing from photoshop collages. His work seems to enter and exit a computer's inputs and outputs a number of times before competition.  Photography became a major driving force in his creativity  through webdesign and local camera clubs where he met and explored different styles. He shoots Mainly digital but most of the work represented here is personal, for fun he prefers to shoot film - the older and more unpredictable the better; often using an old dusty scanner and allowing parts of the negative's tracks to be  exposed in the frame . Some examples of his co...
