Along came a spider

Along came a spider By Paul Woods This image is a photo stack of 12 images shot with an external speedlite with a plastic bag and elastic band as a diffuser .   Triggered of camera by radio trigger.  I  shot 12 images before the spider moved (it was slightly chilled in the refrigerator in a film canister before hand) the recycling time of the speedlite meaning I had a few seconds between each shot . As anyone knows macro at such a magnification can have DOF issues . I have used a reverse ring and an old kit lens from a 35mm film camera 35-80mm from a 50eos . One has to pick an aperture and pressing the dof preview button dismount the lens to keep the aperture set. This in turn means a darker viewfinder if one picks a large fstop as needed for macro to increase area in focus.  I used  photoshop to stack the images - this image still needs more cleaning up before I print (always an ongoing process). It needed a bit of work too after the stacking as it is a co...

2014 artist statement

Paul Woods comes from a fine art background attending Art college for 2 years before leaving. Having worked as a professional screenprinter among other professions he always seemed to utilise computers to create artworks whether it was graphic design or 3d modeling or digital photography. Later adding multimedia to his skillset he embraced animation and music . Paul has illustrated a spanish poetry book drawing from photoshop collages. His work seems to enter and exit a computer's inputs and outputs a number of times before competition.  Photography became a major driving force in his creativity  through webdesign and local camera clubs where he met and explored different styles. He shoots Mainly digital but most of the work represented here is personal, for fun he prefers to shoot film - the older and more unpredictable the better; often using an old dusty scanner and allowing parts of the negative's tracks to be  exposed in the frame . Some examples of his co...

The nature of opinion on art and the dangers of not having one.

This music makes me think so I added it to the blog post - I found it on Youtube - NIN is the band and Trent Reznor the artist. I Watched this song the day after watching the Eurosong final contest in Sweeden and was thinking of how different this music is to what was on that show. Alien almost to what Europeans think generally is a good song. This started me thinking. As I was saying this is way better then all the Eurosongs in my opinion but it would do poorly in the competition - its like really great photography or art being unrecognizable to contemporaries for the most part. I don't think Ireland is nurturing its talent properly. Great writers of the past bring people from all round the world to Writiers Week in Listowel , hopefully one day we will have hundreds of thousands of visitors to the national gallery to see our world class painters , sculptures and photographers - people that clearly see reality for what it is and can express it in an artful way. Not pretentiou...

Digital Beginnings

Here are some examples of digital images created around 2002 just after I bought my first computer - These are not the first raytraced images I ever did, I used to use povray and moray modeler. These images are some of my first explorations with vue d'esprit 3.1 . They look very dated now for sure but as a platform for visualization, computers and software like this is where artwork should be at.   "Fine art" is struggling to impress the public where film and photography can capture and inspire the masses - there are some giants of the artworld that can capture the beauty and simplicity of art,  Jeff Koons and his wonderful metallic balloon pieces. Ron Mueck is also one of these modern artists that demand attentions and respect  from all but for the most part your average art graduate these days , struggles with the concept, communication and visual unity leaving the average viewer somewhat underwhelmed and thinking WTF is this - its...
